MESSAGE FROM OUR CEO

“Building stronger communities begins with housing, but it does not end there.”

As we approach our 90th anniversary and return to our original name, the Austin Housing Authority (AHA), we honor our history and make clear who we are today: an agency building stronger communities through housing, self-sufficiency programs, and long-term public value for more than 42,000 people across Austin.

For nearly 90 years, some of our proudest moments have come from handing a family the keys to a safe home. Today, we are just as proud of a different moment: the day a family hands those keys back because they have built the income, skills, and independence to no longer need our help. That’s the outcome of a stronger community.

04 / SELF-SUFFICIENCY THROUGH HOMEOWNERSHIP

A home of her own.
A future on her terms.

AHA’s pathway to self-sufficiency and homeownership connects stability with a resident’s next chapter.

“

Section 8 and the Family Self-Sufficiency Program were a huge blessing. Because of that support, I’m now able to buy a home. The Austin Housing Authority helped me get where I am today.

AHA’s Homeownership Program helps residents move from housing stability toward long-term ownership by connecting them with resources, partnerships, and opportunities designed to make homeownership more attainable.

For Magenta, that pathway turned a long-held goal into reality. After a Housing Choice Voucher provided stability as she raised three daughters, she advanced her career, increased her income, and built savings through the Family Self-Sufficiency Program. When she was ready for the next step, AHA connected her to Prospect Heights, a first-of-its-kind homeownership community developed with Austin Habitat for Humanity for families with ties to East Austin.

After meeting the program requirements and completing 200 hours of sweat equity, Magenta became a first-time homeowner, building equity, creating generational wealth, and establishing a lasting home for her children.
